A Deck Builder at Heart,
Long Before 5 Star Decks Began
Jeff Tinsman, owner, founder, and head of 5 Star Decks, didn’t always plan on becoming a deck builder or starting a deck-building company.
In his twenties, Jeff bought his first home and decided to build a deck from scratch, just to see if he could. He wasn’t a deck builder yet. Just a curious, hands-on homeowner who wanted to create something useful.
What he found wasn’t just a new backyard. It was a spark. He fell in love with the process of building something real with his own two hands. The attention to detail. The pride in every cut and screw. And most of all, the joy of transforming an empty space into somewhere people could gather, relax, and feel at home.
He earned his Michigan builder’s license in 1996 and spent the next thirty years refining his craft across the construction industry. When Jeff retired eight years ago, he realized something was missing. He missed the work, but more than that, he missed the connections he made with people, the deck building projects that brought dreams to life, and the fulfillment that came from creating special spaces where families could come together.
So he returned to what he loved most: building beautiful, high-quality decks the right way (and meeting 5 Star Pets along the way.)
That is the story of how 5 Star Decks was born, not from a business plan, but from a passion for honest work and happy customers.
